Reading through the Bible: day 38

Exodus 26 – 28

The plan for the Sanctuary continues, not much explanation is needed. Every detail is given, dimensions colour and so on, so it’s all probably quite important as Exodus goes through all this twice.

The Urim and Thummim

We really don’t know much about the as they aren’t mentioned much in the Bible. Very few references are made to them actually being used to make decisions, but that seems to be the purpose.

I checked four study Bibles and they were all equally vague. The theories go that they were cast like lots; or one glowed or some other sign was given by them to give answers in a binary fashion, similar to tossing a coin, or using a magic eight ball. That seems pretty derogatory, but it’s tough to say anything about something that we know little about, and of course, this method isn’t analogous in the sense that it wasn’t a random thing. I suppose the point is that in times when decisions of great importance needed to be made, then God had a way of communicating the correct answer. So theologically, it tells us that God does help in decision making, although one would use the Prayer and scripture to find the answers in modern times.

What are your thoughts?

Please give the reading through the Bible page a look if you haven’t already, there are some background posts and the index to this reading plan. Share it with others who you think can benefit from Reading the Bible.

  1. The High Priest wasn’t a Seer so the breast plate with the Urim and Thumim was a way around the High Priest not being able to look directly through the Urim and Thumim and see the answer like a Seer would in order to get answers as to the geneology of priests and other such concerns.
